Halloween is upon us.

  I was so busy last week that I didn't draw much. But this week, I'm back and it feels great to be able to create beautiful things again.

I had drawn "Slice" and "Sharla Rella" and then didn't know how to complete the tile.
I added the soapstone and "Indy Rella", plus some white charcoal after. Didn't turn out too bad.

I have been working so often on smooth Apprentice tiles, that I forgot how ink works on the regular Zentangle® tiles....
This tile is a little too murky for my liking, but I still like the initial idea that I had. I might attempt this again sometime soon.

My submission for Diva's Challenge.On Instagram, as I was working on this tile, I asked whether I should fill the squarish blocks with tangles. People told me to leave it as it is, or to just fill just a few of the blocks. Here it is, as it is. And I rather like it like this.
I'll be doing something similar on a black tile soon.

Was very tempted to fill in each alternating space to make it more dramatic, but I've held back the urge for now.

And the challenge inspired me to try this method on a rose.
I might fill the background with "African Artist", and maybe add colours. But I wanted to capture how delicate the rose looked on its own.

 
  I live in a condominium, and every year for Halloween, a group of people will make a list of all the houses that want to take part in trick-or-treating. This year, we have 56 households taking part; of which, 115 children will be going around asking for candies and chocolates whilst dressed in cute/scary outfits.

  Had I known about the event sooner, I would've joined too. (You see, it's not common to go trick-or-treating in Singapore. And at the previous place that I lived at, we never celebrated Halloween.) We can always look forward to next year, though. And for now, I shall celebrate with a colourful owl.

Fifty Shades of Grey

  Apparently, "shades of grey" was a Zentangle® terminology long before Fifty Shades of Grey became a thing... Here's a tile I did that shows how different a drawing can look before and after shading.

A tile a day....

  It's been a busy busy week. I have so many tiles to show you, so let's not dally~

A sort of stripe-y tile...
I need to work on my Poke Leaf.

The last time I tried drawing "Mr. E", it didn't turn out looking very.... organic... It looked more like onions, and I didn't like it at all. So I tried getting it right with a monotangle, and this turned out way better than I anticipated.

Auraknot? Singapore Sling? Neither of which?
I don't know. But I do think that this was really pretty.

"On Target" looks very interesting visually, but it was so tiring to colour in those spaces...

I got the idea of doing a tile with a seed and "Rixty" growing out from it... I was inspired by the quote: "They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds."

"Oybay" is a really elegant tangle to draw (it's the right most one).

  Stephanie says: I think it's very interesting to see how two people can be given the same set of instructions and come up with very different things. Even the simple instruction of "do a monotangle featuring Ta-Da" can result in two very different tiles.  ... Just like how each person is different from another. We will all create different things. Therein lies the beauty of Zentangle.

Just Munchin

  Joni says: Just like Stephanie has been busy with making new tiles, I've been busy too. But I've been working on art works for my next exhibition. It's going to be based on flowers, and Stephanie and I decided this morning that we are going to name it "Blossom". Here's a sneak preview at the rose I'm currently working on:

  I also have a few more tiles to show you, too.

"YAH" (You Are Here) is a wonderful pattern to work with. This time, I tried to get the "strips" to connect. I really like how it turned out.
This is actually a Renaissance tile cut into a circle. 

  Now, the next tile has a story to go along with it.

  
  What happened with this tile was that I accidentally got glue onto one of its edge. And of course I was upset about it, but then I remembered how Zentangle teaches the fact that there are no mistakes— only opportunities. So instead of just throwing the tile away, I tried to work with it.

  I ended up drawing a sort of leaf/feather shape and then cutting around that shape. And then I filled the remaining area with Printemps and Yin Cut (gosh, it's been so long since I last drew Yin Cut. I love the pattern so much, but I completely forgot about it until yesterday...)

Zentangle teaches not only about Art, but also about life. When there is a hiccup in your life, don't see it as a mistake... see it as a new opportunity and work with what you have. You might just be pleasantly surprised with how things turn out in the end.

Stephanie is synonymous with productive.

  This week has been really rewarding for me. I switched over to a new sketchbook because my old sketchbook was getting too messy. And as I transferred my old works into my new sketchbook, I was reminded of all the old patterns I used to love. I think that sparked creativity in me and I've just been overflowing with ideas. At the peak of my busy-ness, I was working on five tiles at once. And I'm really excited to show you all that I've created in the past week.

I'm trying new things with Hollibaugh. Still haven't decided whether I should add shading on the Hollibaugh pattern itself, or leave it as it is. Any thoughts on that?

I completely forgot about "Rixty"... I think I'm going to be adding it to my tiles more often.

Playing around with lines, and also "African Artist".

  "African Artist" was a new pattern I learnt recently, and to get a feel of it, I drew it on a Bijou tile. And the first time I drew it.... It didn't turn out quite right. I worked with it, though.... And then did another tile while looking at the step-outs properly.

"Striping" is a wonderful pattern to work with.
I liked the pattern so much that I decided to do one on a black Zentangle tile.

I finished the Renaissance tile, but now very little of the original tile colour peeks through......

Stephanie says: I hope you guys enjoyed the previous post and seeing what my mum had created in the last week. I, too, have been over-flowing with creativity. Let's start of with some Zendalas, shall we?

I was quite sad that I had made the patterns in the triangles too busy, so I didn't think I could add anything to the black areas.... If I re-do this Zendala, I'd definitely do it in a different way.

 

Fun with "Hollibaugh".
There is "Sand Swirl" and "Diva Dance" and "Groovy".
And if I had to tell you; the reason why Diva Dance sort of took up one of the space in Groovy was because I had an "oops moment" and had drawn the lines in that segment wrongly, so I just decided to change it to swirls that resembled "Diva Dance".
I actually liked it better after. Remember, there are no mistakes in Zentangle®. Only opportunities. ^-^

  Up next, new experiments with black Zendala tiles... (You have to think outside the border, sometimes, you know.)

Sparkly~

Completely filled in.

In case you were wondering, I'm using Uni-ball's Signo 0.8 in Silver and Sparkling.
They're readily available in Singapore at Popular, and I feel the Silver ink looks more opaque and flows more smoothly than any white ink pen in the market.

  Finally, some works-in-progress:

A Renaissance tile that I'm probably going to end up colouring with coloured pencils, and an Apprentice tile. Those little triangles on the Apprentice tile took me forever to finish..... Next time I'd just fill them completely in black then add the white lines using Uni-ball's Signo Broad in White. Would have been much quicker that way.
