Recommended Artist: Joshua M. Smith

There's something about black and white works that makes me drawn to them. The simplicity of it. Where unnecessary details have to be removed. Where there is no distraction of colours. Where you have to have a compelling enough subject to capture a viewer's attention. The symbolism of duality in those works. Good and evil. Light and darkness. The white wolf and the black wolf? Which side of yourself will you embrace?

The details in Joshua Smith's art is insane and he consistently makes really strong pieces. You should definitely check out more of his awesome works via his website here.

Painting of the Day: by Tran Hong Suong

gorgeous detailed line art with an art nouveau inspired woman with accent red
I first saw this work at the Art Apart Art Fair 2014, and how could I not have fallen in love with it. It has a slight reminiscent of Art Nouveau, paired with a kind of Peranakan influence in its line work. Gorgeous limited palette, absolutely insane line work, with a beautiful composition. I would say its the Tran Hong Suong's best work to date.

I love his muted backgrounds paired with his expressive terracotta colored line work. His color palette is gorgeous and the amount of detail he strips from his subject brings out the best of what he draws.

Stephanie's Sketches v.5

It's time again for an update on what I've been up to lately...  ^_^

All sketches are done in my Monologue sketchbook, which I love to bits, from Popular (selling at $18.75) Also, I've been asked this question quite often; What do you call the sort of art you do?

It's called "Zentangle". You should google it. It's a form of meditative art, and the works that I do are Zentangle™ inspired.

I absolutely love the softness of the girls he portrays.  I love the colour pallette he employs, and I love that he puts in just enough details in each work. His website is also very easy to navigate, and I highly recommend that you go over to take a look at the huge body of work he has there.

Art Apart Art Fair 2014

Art Apart 2014 was awesome sauce. Parkroyal @ Pickering has gorgeous architecture that really complimented the modern art that was exhibited. The volunteers at the event were really friendly and helpful. The works were brilliant and I had loads of fun, and it really helped get my creative juices flowing again. If you didn't go, here are some of the highlights of the event.

Picture of the scenery from Parkroyal @ Pickering.
This was the view from the room that The P' Club Group was occupying.
They had really beautiful sculptures in the room. I liked their wooden carvings the best.

Special mentions to the following artists:
  • Joel Geolamen whose photograph works were exceptionally done.
  • Frank Zhen for his upcoming exhibition in Singapore.
  • Ayaka Yamada for her gorgeous and insanely detailed lithographs. (The only site that seems to have her works is here, but they seem to be old works...)
  • A shoutout to Blue Lotus. They had an artist by the name of Pearl Yang who made beautiful ceramic works.
I thought the fair had a brilliant concept of placing art works in hotel rooms as the rooms mimic the rooms we'd put the art works in. Rather than having to imagine how the art works would look like in your living room whilst you're looking at it hanging on a white wall in an art gallery, you get to see it in a more natural environment. The art works shown were lovely. The artist that were present were lovely. I really hope to see what Art Apart comes up with next year.

It still amazes me how much details there is in street art works. l7m uses a beautiful range of colours to portray his subjects, and I am completely in love with the first piece of his work pictured above because of the spontaneity of the bird.

Painting of the Day: Untitled Portrait of a Girl

Title Unknown by Yvonne Kozlina
I do believe this work was made in coloured pencils. Not much is said on her site. I do, however, love the soft glow of the sitter's face and the beautiful lost and found edges that can be so difficult to create in coloured pencils. There's just enough details, and the composition is also lovely.

Beautiful Aurora Video by astrofotografen

You should really check out this awesome link. It's a virtual reality of the auroras that happened on March 17 when an CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) hit Earth's magnetic field. Two days earlier, sunspot AR1692 had produced a M1-class solar flare that resulted in the CME that hit Earth. The pictures were taken in Östersund, Sweden between 19:20 and 23:35 UT.
